Restaurants/Eateries in Hampi

There are lots of good restaurants in Hampi. We explored restaurants in Hampi at Temple side as well as across river side. Let me share the list. The best part is that all the restaurants which are on temple side are located in Hampi bazaar which is very small and thus you can easily explore all the restaurants. I am not at all a foodie and did not like to explore the restaurants much but In Hampi, I think the foodie inside me wake up from deep slumbers. Also, low bedding is available almost in all the restaurants.

Temple side Restaurants

Tom And Jerry: It was one of the best restaurant in Hampi. Ambience was super cool. Light mediational music was played and it always remains full. You can see lot of foreigners playing chess and having discussions. Also, food was also great. It is known for Israeli food like falafel, hummus, Bruschetta. Apart from it, North Indian food is also good. I highly recommend this place.

Tom & Jerry

Chill out: The sitting area of this place was visible from our guest house and it was very nice. Ambiance was very lively. It is famous for its drinks and soups along with Pizza and Pasta. It is also a laidback place where you can spend 2, 3 hours reading novels, playing cards and drinking coffee. It was just in front of our room at 1st floor and thus we wake up to the sound of soothing music it plays in the morning. You will find here lot of people during morning hours for breakfast.

Chill out

Mango tree: Sometime back this restaurant was situated across river and was quite a hit but now it has been relocated to temple side and also lost its popularity. I found the ambiance quite dull although the food was great. Again, all the restaurants in Hampi serve good Israeli food as this place is quite famous among Israelis. Low bedding was comfortable because you can open your legs after sometime, there is a provision under table unlike other places.

Mango Tree

Venkateswara: It is a very small restaurant with only 4 tables and ambiance is simple but the food is ultimate. Although the preparation time is long, but the food served here is tasty, healthy and fresh. When we ordered omlette, we saw 1 guy bringing eggs and bread from outside. We also ordered poori aloo and it takes around 45 minutes but it was very tasty. Masala tea is a must have. Menu is small comprising of south Indian food, omlette and Poori aloo and some sandwiches.

Across river

On our way to Goan Corner.

The Goan Corner: This restaurant lies at one of the secluded corner of the Hampi and the attitude here is quite laidback. The beauty of this place is the terrific views of paddy fields that it provides. We ordered pasta here and were satisfied. The only thing that disappoints me was that when we entered in the restaurant, probably, there was no electricity and hence no music was playing here unlike other restaurants of Hampi where you find meditational instrumental music going on all day. Also, since I don’t like dogs, so pet dogs of owner approaching me is actually quite irritating for me. Although some people were really playing with dogs but it didn’t impress me. It is a place where you feel foreigner in India.

At this point, we were confident that we are going right. Some flags opposite tells us Goan Corner is near

This place is for those who love nature

Returning from Gaon Corner

Laughing Buddha: This is the best restaurant across river. It is also situated out of the way but it is well known and you can easily trace it. This place offers splendid views of Tungabhadra River along with Hampi tower. This place will appeal you better if you want to spend time and not just have food. Not only the food was tasty, even the flute music played there was fantastic. Imagine sitting and watching the river listening to flute music isn’t it relaxing. This place has perfect setting for contemplation and introspection. I would recommend this place if you have some 3, 4 hours at your disposal. Food is great.

We drink to this view

Our sitting area

Gauthami: This place is along the main road. Food and juices are good. This place was very clean and also quite big but Food is not that great but you can definitely try some mint fresh fruit juices.

Trip to Hampi - Part 7 : Day 3 Itenerary

9th December 2013, Monday

We woke up at 7 am. I was not in a mood to go back again to join that corporate rat race. As soon as I woke up, my mind is full of office, work informing colleague about my leave. I went upstairs looking for some peace. Hampi is a very beautiful town and our guest house offered very good view.  I and wife took some pictures. Some foreigners were doing Yoga in other guest houses nearby. We talked to some of them. I told them how much I appreciate the way they travel. I asked them how they manage to travel for so long. One of the guys Tommy told me that they work for some time quit their work and then join again. Isn’t it interesting?

He was in India from last 6 months and travels extensively to Kashmir, Shimla, Amritsar, Delhi, Rajasthan, Dharamshala, Kerala and many other places. We exchanges emails and blog addresses.
Finally, we took a bath and checkout at 9am and had our breakfast at Venkateswara restaurant.
My wife CA and me

Then we took a bus to Hospet and From Hospet, we took a bus to Tungabhadra Dam.

Tungabhadra Dam is in Hospet and perfect place to kill some time before we can catch out train at 3 pm. For more pictures of Tungabhadra Dam, click here.

Dam was also very scenic especially 1 location where I took  power nap of 20 minutes to get recharged.

Please note that there is also cloak room in Tungabhadra Dam so if you find a huge queue in the cloak room of the railway station, you can use this one.

We reach railway station at 2pm. Our train was the same from which we arrive. It was scheduled to reach Hyderabad at 5:30 am in the morning. It confuses me that the same train take 9:30 hours from Hyderabad to hospet but taking 14 hours from Hospet to Hyderabad until we reach Guntakal. At Guntakal, I came to know that the train will stop here for 5 hours and will join another train. It was a slip route train. But, nowhere it is mentioned that it will stop for 5 hours in between.

Finally we reach home on 10th Dec. at 7 am drenched with fresh memories of Hampi.

Trip to Hampi - Part 6 : Day 2- Trek to Mathanga Hills

The trek was very satisfying and fulfilling. Although the difficulty level was beyond expectations and surprising but its best part is that it gives us the moment to be cheered later, a long lasting memory and above all one of its kind experiences.

Way to Mathanga Hills

Let me start with the very beautiful quote by  Pat Ament :

When you ride your bike, you're working your legs, but your mind is on a treadmill. When you play chess, your mind is clicking along, but your body is stagnating. Climbing brings it together in a beautiful, magical way. The adrenaline is flowing, and it's flowing all the time.

I would say trip to Hampi will be incomplete without climbing to Mathanga hills which provides the panoramic 360 degree view of the Hampi. Once you get at the top, you will easily understand the Map of Hampi. However getting to the top is a tough row to hoe.

During our complete to and fro trip, we encountered only 3, 4 climbers and coincidentally all of them belong to Spain and and also all were alone.

At 2, 3 places, you have to climb a very risky mountain with no support at all. It would be difficult for me to explain in words. Please see the picture.

Tipping point 1: See man made stairs.

The trek is moderately challenging as there is no clearway or signboards for directions and at some places, one will really doubt if he is on the right route. But don’t worry much about it, trust on your intuition.

One of the Difficult turn

Where the end road will be visible only after climbing these turns.

Trek gets tougher as you climb higher. Also, just before reaching to the top, there in one very critical turn which is also the turning point for some of the people.

Most difficult point to cross. Seeing the height

is enough to give you shiver

It is really difficult to cross as the stones were slippery and there were no stones/support on one of the side and also you cannot hold anything. You must maintain balance at that point. I would not recommend this place to people with acrophobia. I still remember the dilemma I faced that day, whether to cross it or trace back even when I am not afraid of heights. Glancing at that point is enough to give you the shiver. But the spirit inside me told me to cross.

“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity.”  John Muir

Views were worth it.

Beautiful Banana Plantation, Hampi Tower and Virupaksha temple

Premises of Mustard Ganesha and Jain temples.

Pushkarni and also the route to Vitthala temple

After enjoying the view, it was the time to go back.

“Getting to the top is optional. Getting down is mandatory.”
― Ed Viesturs, No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World's 14 Highest Peaks

While going back, one should be more watchful and cautious. There were only a couple of points which were challenging. At both the places, there is turn such that there are no stones at the other side and seeing the height while descending can be dizzy. At one of the point, something similar to stairs were constructed in stone but it was very slippery. It did not take more than 20 minutes while descending; however, it was little less than 1 hour while ascending. For regular trekkers and climbers, however, it will not require even that much time.
